What is IMO EEXI?
EEXI (Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index) is a mandatory IMO technical energy-efficiency measure under MARPOL Annex VI Regulation 23. Effective from 1 January 2023. Every ship ≥400 GT must show Attained EEXI ≤ Required EEXI at next IAPP renewal survey.
How is Attained EEXI calculated?
Attained = (P_ME × SFC_ME × CF + P_AE × SFC_AE × CF) / (DWT × Vref × f_c). P_ME is 75% of MCR (or EPL-limited MCR), SFC in g/kWh, CF is fuel carbon factor.
What is EPL?
EPL (Engine Power Limitation) is the most common EEXI compliance solution. Physically limits main engine MCR to a lower value (e.g. 75%). Both P_ME and Vref drop, and Attained EEXI improves proportionally. Class-certified, permanent.
