What are the Poseidon Principles?

The Poseidon Principles are a voluntary framework for financial institutions that integrate climate considerations into lending decisions for the international shipping sector. Launched June 2019 in New York by 11 founding banks; signatory count now exceeds 35 institutions covering over $200 billion of shipping loans — roughly 60% of the global ship-finance market.

Each signatory bank publishes an annual portfolio Alignment Score — a single number showing whether the aggregated carbon intensity of the ships it finances is above or below the IMO decarbonisation trajectory (initially the 50% by 2050 target; updated in 2023 to net-zero by/around 2050 per the revised IMO GHG strategy).

A positive score means the portfolio is above (worse than) the target trajectory. A negative score means below (better). The score is published, audited, and comparable across banks — creating market pressure on banks (and by extension on shipowners) toward more efficient vessels.

Who is bound by Poseidon Principles?

The Principles bind the signatory banks directly, not shipowners. But because the score depends on the emissions performance of every ship in the bank's loan book, banks push the compliance data collection down to owners:

Poseidon Principles vs Sea Cargo Charter

Two related but distinct frameworks — one for banks, one for charterers. Data plumbing overlaps substantially.

For LNG operators serving both banks and charterers: The same voyage-level AER data feeds both. If you're already collecting DCS/MRV data cleanly, Poseidon + SCC reporting adds minimal marginal effort — but the data quality must be verifier-grade because the Alignment Score depends on it.

Track AER per vessel — auto-generated for Poseidon submission

VEMO computes AER per voyage, projects year-end AER vs IMO trajectory, and generates the exact Poseidon Principles submission format your bank expects. Sea Cargo Charter aligned from same data.

Frequently asked questions

Is Poseidon Principles mandatory?
No. It is a voluntary framework for financial institutions. But if your lending bank is a signatory, the data submission requirements become de-facto mandatory for you as a shipowner — the bank cannot compute its Alignment Score without your ship data.
How is Poseidon AER different from CII?
Both use similar formulas (Fuel × Cf / DWT × Distance). CII is annual per-ship rating A-E for regulatory compliance. AER is a continuous ratio used to weight portfolio alignment. Same data feeds both.
What is the IMO trajectory used for alignment?
Originally the IMO 2018 GHG Strategy target (50% GHG reduction by 2050). Updated in 2023 to align with the revised IMO GHG Strategy — net-zero GHG emissions from international shipping by/around 2050 with intermediate 20-30% by 2030 and 70-80% by 2040 checkpoints.
Do LNG carriers score well on Poseidon Principles?
LNG carriers on 2-stroke slow-speed engines with modern containment (Mark III Flex, NO96 GW) often align well due to LNG's lower carbon factor (Cf=2.75 vs 3.114 HFO). Older Moss steam-turbine vessels may struggle. Sea Cargo Charter's methodology captures methane slip more explicitly than base AER.
Where can I find current signatories?
poseidonprinciples.org publishes the current signatory list and each bank's annual disclosure. Cross-check your lending bank list annually — new signatories are added continuously.
